Fiat Panda background information

Fiat Panda is a city car of the Italian company Fiat. In 2004 it was named the best car of the year in Europe.

First generation, 1980–2003

The car was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro as a modern interpretation of the ideas laid down in the Citroën 2CV and Renault 4 – the simplicity and cheapness of both the car itself and its maintenance. Fiat Panda was introduced to the public in 1980. Initially, the model was equipped with a small, two-cylinder engine with air cooling, volume 562 cm (taken from Fiat 126) and a four-cylinder engine with water cooling, volume 903 cm (with Fiat 127).

Second generation, 2003–2012

During the development of the new Panda (codenamed Model 169) it was planned to give the name “Gingo”, but it was considered very similar to the Renault Twingo and, therefore, it was decided to keep the old name. By design, the new Panda resembles a first-generation microwave or micro-SUV rather than a first-generation hatchback. In 2004, the car was recognized as the best car in Europe. Since September 2005, all cars are equipped with ABS, EBD, stability control system and front airbags in the basic version. On October 5, 2005, the 500,000th Fiat Panda II came off the assembly line. A total of 2,168,491 second-generation cars were produced.
