Suzuki Jimny background information
The name Jimny was first introduced in 1970 by Suzuki to refer to compact SUVs, originally produced under the LJ (Light Jeep) brand. Jimmy’s name is made up of two words – “jeep” and “mini”.
Suzuki Jimny SJ-series (30, 40) (1981-1994)
In 1981, the Suzuki Jimny SJ410 debuted with a 4-cylinder 4-stroke water-cooled engine with a capacity of 0.97 liters and 45 hp.
In 1984, the Suzuki Jimny SJ413 debuted with a 1.3-liter, 4-cylinder, water-cooled 4-stroke engine with 60 hp. and a torque of 100 Nm.
In 1985, a model called the Suzuki Samurai began to be exported to the United States.
Suzuki Jimny JA-series (10, 20, 30, 40) (1995-1998)
In 1995, the small SUV received a new spring front suspension and power steering, which depending on the modification could be hydraulic or electric.
The third generation of the JB series (1998-2018)
At the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, Suzuki introduced the new generation Jimny (JB32). In the design of the car was left a chassis stepped gearbox and transfer case, unlike many competing compact SUVs that do not have a reduced number of gears. The car is offered with two types of bodies: with a standard rigid top and with an awning, presented at the Barcelona Motor Show in May 1999 and manufactured exclusively by Santana in Spain from 1999 to 2009.
A reduced Kay version (JB23) with a 660 cc K6A engine is available for the domestic Japanese market.
Fourth generation (from 2018)
Like its predecessor, the body of the “fourth” Jimny (JB74) is mounted on a ladder frame, but it is new and stiffer. Expanded continuous bridges have increased the track to 1395 mm at the front and 1405 at the rear (+40 here and there). The downshift remained in the transfer case. Drum brakes are preserved behind.
Contrary to expectations, all-wheel drive remained rigidly pluggable. The three-mode system is called AllGrip Pro AWD because it is “designed for professionals.”
The length of the Jimny is calculated together with the spare casing, it has decreased to 3645 mm (-50). Width – 1645 (+45), height – 1725 (+20), wheelbase has not changed – 2250. Clearance has grown to 210 mm (+20). Angle of entry – 37 ° (+2), exit – 49 ° (+23), ramps – 28 ° (-4). The dimension of the tires is 195/80 R15.
