Hyundai Motor Company is a South Korean automotive company. The largest automaker in the country and the fourth in the world. The headquarters is located in Seoul.

The company was founded in 1967 by Jung Joo-yong. It was part of a small (group of companies) Hyundai Motor Group, from which it was separated in 2003. In the 1960s, the company was engaged in the production of several cars and one truck model of the American concern Ford.

In 1972, the South Korean government gave the right to manufacture cars to four companies, one of which was Hyundai. In 1974, the production of the small Hyundai Pony (Eng.) Russian began. The appearance of which was worked by masters from the Italian studio Italdesign Giugiaro. By 1980, the concern was to produce up to 50,000 cars a year with localization of component production up to 91%, which was done. The first generation of the popular and nowadays Sonata sedan appeared in the fall of 1988, in 1996 the sports model Coupe went into production.

In 1998, Hyundai took over Korean automobile company Kia Motors. In 2000, the company entered into a strategic alliance with DaimlerChrysler for several years. According to 2006 data, the five-plant Hyundai plant in the Korean city of Ulsan was considered the largest car manufacturing plant in the world.
