Pontiac Bonneville background information

Pontiac Bonneville is a family of passenger cars manufactured by the American company Pontiac from 1957 to 2005. Until 1981, Bonneville in Canada was known as Parisienne.

The Bonneville family includes four model lines:

  • high-performance convertible, made in small quantities (1957);
  • a series of full-size models, which for most years was the top of the Pontiac model line (1958-1981);
  • a mid-size rear-wheel drive series, the successor to the Pontiac Le Mans (1981-1986);
  • a series of full-size sedans with front-wheel drive (1987-2005).

In 2000, Bonneville was completely redesigned with significant advances in design, engineering and technology, which Pontiac called “luxury with position”. Bonneville was now built on the G-Platform. Remaining true to Pontiac’s Wide Tracks, it had the widest track in its class at 62.6 inches at the front and 62.1 inches (1580 mm) at the rear. The GM StabiliTrak stability control system was introduced on the top SSEi supercharged model, later replaced by the GXP.

Bonneville revived the V8 version of the GXP in 2004, the first since 1986, as a result of the cessation of production of the Oldsmobile Aurora. This opened a gap in GM’s lineup between Pontiac and Buick, allowing Pontiac to expand the range somewhat. The Cadillac 4.6-liter Northstar V8 engine produces 275 hp, 410 Nm and develops 0-60 mph (0-97 km / h) in 6.5 seconds, showing better performance than the BMW 330i and the BMW 530i and Lexus ES.

The best NHTSA tests for the 2005 Pontiac Bonneville led to a 4-star safety rating for the driver and a 5-star for the front passenger.

In the last year of production, Pontiac has presented the mid-level SLE with a new GXP style. The 2005 SLE showcased all of GXP’s styling devices, except for the wheels, badges, muffler tips, and engine, which remained unique to the GXP.
