Dodge Caravan background information

Dodge Caravan are minivans manufactured by Dodge since 1983.

The first generation

The first Dodge Caravan appeared in 1983 and immediately gained popularity, as it marked the beginning of a completely new class of spacious family cars. To please fans of different brands, the same car was sold under the names Chrysler Voyager, Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan. They could be distinguished only by branded “nameplates”, elements of the front of the body (radiator grille, bumpers) and some differences in the cabin.

The second generation

In March 1990, all models of the family were modernized, the body and chassis were significantly redesigned, even the dimensions changed (4525x1830x1680 mm), the maximum trunk volume increased to 3250 liters. Body shapes have become smoother and smoother. In the range of power units there is a 3.3-liter 164-horsepower V6 gasoline engine, which is installed on the Grand model with an elongated wheelbase (4895x1830x1690 mm). It was used until 1994. The year 1991 was marked by the appearance of the all-wheel drive modification of the AWD with an independent rear axle with a De Dion suspension. In the same year, the line of power units was replenished with a 99-horsepower 4-cylinder engine, which became 15% more economical than the most wasteful in the range of 3.0-liter power unit V6, consumes up to 17 l / 100 km.

The fifth generation minivan debuted in 2007 at the North American International Auto Show as a 2008 model. Starting with this generation, Chrysler stopped production of the short wheelbase, leaving only the long Grand Caravan base. A new Dodge Journey crossover is offered instead of the short model.

The car is equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 engine and a new 4.0-liter V6, aggregated with 6-speed. Automatic transmission, as well as 3.3 liters of Flex-Fuel V6, aggregated with 4-speed automatic transmission.
