MG F / TF Background Information
MG F and MG TF are cars with a rear-wheel-drive body with a medium engine location, manufactured under the MG brand by three manufacturers from 1995 to 2011.
The MG F was the first new model developed as an MG since the creation of the MGB, which was manufactured from 1962 to 1980. The 1980s brand was used to denote the high-performance models of the then Austin Rover Group and was introduced on the MG RV8, limited edition restored MGB, which was sold between 1993 and 1995.
The MG F was originally developed by the Rover Group when it was owned by British Aerospace and was launched after the business was sold to German carmaker BMW. The BMW Group, which owns the Rover Group, produced the model from 1995 to 2000. In 2000, BMW split the Rover Group, separating Rover and MG, after which the latter formed MG Rover. MG Rover has been producing the MG F since 2000, significantly updating it in 2002 and changing its name to the MG TF.
MG Rover was liquidated in 2005, as a result of which production of the MG TF model ceased. The remnants of MG Rover’s business were sold to Nanjing Automobile, and production of MG TF resumed in 2007 under its own MG Motor, owned by Nanjing. The model, which at that time was very outdated, was not in demand and lasted on the assembly line until 2011.
