Toyota iQ background information

Serial production of the compact three-door Toyota iQ hatchback began in Japan in 2008. The idea of ​​the developers was to create a full-fledged four-seater car less than three meters long.

Toyota iQ was designed on the original chassis, although its four-seater was conditional: only a child or a very short person could fit behind the driver, but the front passenger seat was slightly shifted forward, so it was more spacious behind it. But the interior of the car was “full”, and its equipment included nine airbags, a stabilization system, climate control, heated seats, light and rain sensors, a keyless entry system and other options.

In other markets, hatchbacks were also offered with a three-cylinder 1.0 petrol engine (68 hp) and with a 1.4-liter turbodiesel developing 90 hp. Both gasoline units could be equipped with both a manual transmission and a variator, and a diesel engine could only be equipped with “mechanics”.

In the American market, the car was offered under the name Scion iQ, and a small batch of cars was released under the Aston Martin brand – they differed in front end design and interior trim.

In 2012, a small-scale electric version of Toyota eQ (aka Toyota iQ EV) with a 47 kW electric motor and a lithium-ion battery that provides a range of up to 80 km appeared in the lineup.

In the first year of sales in the European market, 44 thousand Toyota iQ hatchbacks were sold, but the initial interest in the model quickly passed, and in the future the demand for the car steadily decreased to 3.5 thousand cars a year. Sales in Japan were even more modest – about a thousand units annually.

The production of the Toyota iQ model was completed on December 31, 2015.
