Toyota Caldina background information

Toyota Caldina – Toyota station wagon, manufactured from 1992 to 2007. The first generation of the model is a five-door version of the Toyota Corona sedan, the second generation is a modification of the Toyota Avensis, and the third generation is a stand-alone model.

The first generation (1992 – 2002)

The first generation (platform T19x) Caldina – five-door passenger and cargo station wagon (load capacity 400-500 kg), created on the basis of a four-door sedan Toyota Corona. The passenger version has shock absorber struts in the rear suspension, and the commercial cargo version has springs. Caldina has never been officially exported outside of Japan, but in Europe it has a twin – Toyota Carina E. Station wagon was produced from November 1992 to September 1997, in 1995 the model was restyled, a commercial version from November 1992 to July 2002. The main changes affected the trunk lid, bumper and panel.

The second generation (1997 – 2002)

The second generation T21x has the same platform as the T19x. The appearance and interior have undergone serious, cardinal changes. The all-wheel drive transmission has received a new layout – all-wheel drive V-Flex is automatically connected.

The classic All Time 4WD all-wheel drive transmission remained only in the top complete set paired with the 3S-GTE engine. In the case of a manual transmission, the machine has a Torsen differential in the rear derailleur in addition to locking the axle differential.

The top-of-the-range GT-T is equipped with a 260-horsepower 3S-GTE turbo engine. Gen4 engine (DIS4 – separate coils for each cylinder). The E150F’s manual transmission is virtually identical to the Celica GT-Four, except for the 3rd and 4th gears. In the GT-T they are shorter, which is much more pleasing when driving around the city. For the unpretentious there is a version with the U140F.

As with the previous generation, there are modifications with a petrol 1.8 (7A-FE), 2.0 (3S-FE and 3S-GE) and 2.2 diesel (3C-TE) engine. Automatic and mechanical transmissions. Drive – front and all-wheel drive. In 2000, the model was restyled. The engines remained the same (with a few exceptions), but were upgraded. Outside of Japan, it received a new name – Toyota Avensis.

Third generation (2002 – 2007)

The new Caldina, introduced in September 2002, the T24x body model, has a more sporty appearance and a unique body. In many respects it is structurally similar to the platform underlying the Toyota Allion and Toyota Premio, but the rear suspension is borrowed from its older brother – Toyota Avensis (body T25x).

In 2005, the model was restyled. The changes affected the front bumper skirt, the bumper itself and the radiator grille. The headlights now come with “xenon” lamps and automatic level adjustment. The changes also affected the back. The taillights were changed. They became transparent, and they carried reversing lamps. Wheel disks have also changed. Some colors were removed from the range of body colors.

The colors of the seat upholstery have changed. Dashboard backlight – optitron. Minor changes have affected the center panel due to the use of a new multimedia device, the layout of which has become only 2DIN. A small niche under the climate control unit has been vacated.

This model is equipped with a new line of Toyota engines: 1.8 1ZZ-FE with VVTi system and 2.0 1AZ-FSE with VVTi system and direct injection D4. The modification with the two-liter 3S-GTE turbo engine remained.

There are only 4-speed automatic transmission (unlike Toyota Allion and Toyota Premio variator paired with 1AZ-FSE engine is not used). Front-wheel drive (1ZZ-FE and 1AZ-FSE), all-wheel drive (1AZ-FSE) or all-wheel drive (only paired with 3S-GTE).
