Porsche 944 background information
The Porsche 944 is a sports car produced by Porsche at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm (Germany) and at the main Porsche plant in Stuttgart from 1982 to 1991. It had a 4-cylinder in-line engine (also in turbocharged version) with a volume of 2479 cm3 (2.5 liters), and later 2.7 and 3.0 liters. Equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, optionally installed 3-speed automatic transmission.
The layout of the engine and transmission was the same as in the earlier Porsche 924: the engine was located at the front, and the transmission at the rear, which provided close to 50:50 weighting on the axles.
At the end of 1985, a restyling of the model was carried out, which replaced the interior (the square panel gave way to the modern oval) and the technical part of the car; in 1987, some significant improvements were made, most notably in the updated chassis of the car.
Version S2 (1989-1991) and late turbo (1991 only) were also available in convertible body.
