In European countries, this car was sold as the Volkswagen-Porsche 914/4. The version with a six-cylinder two-liter carburetor boxer (110 hp) was called the Porsche 914/6. In the American market, both modifications were known under the Porsche brand.

Production of the Porsche 914 roadster continued until 1976. A total of 119 thousand cars were made, of which only 3.3 thousand had six-cylinder engines.
