Subaru Outback background information
Subaru Outback is a crossover manufactured by Subaru since 1995. Its original concept originated in Subaru America, which in the mid-90s suffered from falling sales due to lack of adequate supply in the SUV niche, which was just in full swing. Having no money to design a completely new SUV, Subaru decided to add plastic body kits and slightly raise the suspension in their Legacy station wagon. The new car was named Legacy Outback in honour of the wild regions of Australia. Australian actor Paul Hogan introduced the new model to the North American market, playing on the Australian origin of the model name and promoting the car as an adequate and more effective alternative to bulky SUVs.
All Subaru Outbacks sold in the world have all-wheel drive as standard and the only available drive option.
Sales were so high that Tim Magony, senior vice president of Subaru America, said: “[Outback] saved our company.”
Subaru introduced the Outback in Japan under the name Legacy Grand Wagon – then in 1997, it was renamed the Legacy Lancaster. Beginning in 2004, the name Outback began to be used worldwide. At the same time, Outback began to be considered a separate independent model line (except for Japan itself). All cars of this type come from the Subaru Legacy, with the exception of the Outback Sport (also known as the Impreza Outback), which was based on the Subaru Impreza hatchback.
Some sources believe that Subaru has created a new class of cars with its Outback – crossovers. While other publications believe that Outback is a worthy continuation of the traditions that American Motors launched in 1979 with its Eagle.
