Chevrolet Citation background information

The Chevrolet Citation debuted in 1979 for the American market. It was the first front wheel drive model in the history of the brand.

In the aftermath of the 1973 oil crisis, Americans increasingly opted for compact and fuel-efficient Japanese cars, refusing to buy conservative and voracious American cars. General Motors responded to market demands with the GM X front wheel drive platform.

One of the models on the new platform was the Chevrolet Citation, a compact by American standards, offered with three body types: a two-door coupe, a three-door hatchback and a five-door hatchback. And in 1982, the Chevrolet Celebrity sedan was made on the basis of the Chevrolet Citation.

A four-cylinder engine with a volume of 2.5 liters (84-92 hp) or a V6 2.8 engine (110-135 hp) was installed on the car. Transmissions – a four-stage “mechanics” or a three-stage “automatic”. Prices for the 1980 model year car started at $ 4,800.

Chevrolet Citation kicked off triumphantly. In the first year, 810 thousand cars were sold in the United States – it was the most popular car in the country. However, then the demand for the model began to steadily decline, including due to the emergence of competitors from the Chrysler concern – the Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant models. Already in 1983, sales did not exceed 100 thousand copies, and in 1985 the car was discontinued.

A total of 1,642,587 Chevrolet Citation vehicles were produced; this model was replaced by the Chevrolet Beretta and Chevrolet Corsica.
