Toyota GT86 background information
Toyota 86 – a sports car developed jointly by Japanese car manufacturers Toyota and Subaru. It has a body type 2 + 2 seats, rear-wheel drive, front engine location.
The first generation (2012-2021)
The model is sold under three different brands: Toyota (Toyota 86 in Japan and Australia and Toyota GT-86 in Europe), Subaru (Subaru BRZ) and Scion (Scion FR-S). The Scion has few distinctive elements and provides configurations to reduce the base price in the United States. Subaru BRZ differs mainly in its front part, where the radiator grille has a hexagonal shape compared to the inverted trapezoid in Toyota and Scion, as well as positioning BRZ as the most luxurious version of the platform, with more standard features and a higher price.
It was first introduced as a concept car in October 2009 at the Tokyo Motor Show called the Toyota FT-86, an acronym for Toyota’s Future. Later, a high-performance version was launched in January 2010 at the Tokyo Auto Salon as the Toyota Toyota FT-86 G Sport. In 2011, the third concept car, Toyota FT-86 II, was shown at the Geneva Motor Show. The BRZ and FR-S also have their own concept cars, the Subaru STI BRZ concept and the Scion FR-S concept. Serial versions 86, BRZ and FR-S were presented in 2011 at the Tokyo Motor Show.
Initially, the 86, BRZ and FR-S will be presented with a 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine boxer manufactured by Subaru with a capacity of 2.0 liters (engine code Toyota 4U-GSE, engine code Subaru FA20), 200 hp. (147 kW) at 7000 rpm, 205 Nm at 6400-6600 rpm, which is equipped with direct fuel injection from Toyota. The model will be offered with two six-speed gearboxes: manual and automatic. Weight 86 from 1180 to 1250 kg depending on a complete set and the equipment.
Production of the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 began on March 16, 2012. In the first month after February 2, 2012, Toyota received 7,000 pre-orders for the Toyota 86 in Japan. The first sales of Toyota 86 are scheduled for April 6.
Second generation (since 2021)
On April 5, 2021, the second generation Toyota GT86 was presented at the online event. Now the model is called Toyota GR 86, where GR means Gazoo Racing. The second generation Subaru BRZ debuted on November 18, 2020. BRZ is only available in the United States.
