Datsun 510 background information
The DATSUN 510 is a compact tourism automobile of segment C with front-mounted rear-tilted front motor, built by the Japanese manufacturer Datsun, Nissan subsidiary between 1967 and 1973, available in 2 or 4-door sedan bodies, Station Wagon 5 doors or 2-door coupe. It is the evolution of the Datsun 410, which in turn was replaced by the Datsun 610.
Despite having a presence in many markets around the world, Datsun was still seen as a dubious quality company and anonymous and boring cars. On 510 of 1968, with its great value for money and a series of sports victories, changed that perception and helped the brand change its image and position itself better throughout the globe.
While the Datsun BlueBird 410 of the 60s was a good compact, economic, robust and easy-to-maintained car, it was also something anonymous and soft compared to other cars with which it competed in the many markets in which it was available. This, combined with the nascent reputation of Datsun in many of these markets, caused the brand to face difficulties by positioning themselves in the collective imaginary of the average motorist, despite being successful in sales and have good penetration outside of Japan.
