Holden background information

General Motors-Holden was an Australian automobile manufacturing company based in Port Melbourne, Victoria, discontinued in February 2020 according to General Motors announcements.

The company was originally independent, but from 1931 it was a subsidiary of General Motors. Holden had taken over General Motors’ operations in Australia and has a partial stake in GM Daewoo in South Korea. Over the years Holden has offered a wide range of locally produced vehicles, supplemented by imported models from General Motors. In the past Holden offered models from Isuzu, Nissan, Suzuki and Toyota under its brand name.

Holden bodies are built in Elizabeth, South Australia and engines are produced at the Fishermens Bend plant in Port Melbourne. Historically, assembly and production plants have operated in every state in Australia. Until 1990 the GM subsidiary Holden in New Zealand operated a plant based in Trentham. Consolidation of car production at Elizabeth was completed in 1988, but some assembly operations continued at Dandenong until 1996.

Although Holden’s share of auto exports has fluctuated since the 1950s, declining sales of large cars in Australia prompted the company to look to international markets to increase profitability. In 2006 Holden reported earnings of US$1.3 billion from exports.

However, since 2010, Holden has incurred losses due to the strong Australian dollar. The government of Prime Minister Tony Abbott ended subsidies to the industry in 2014, in the order of US$23 billion between 1997 and 2012. 2 On December 11, 2013, Holden announced that it will cease the production of vehicles and engines for the end of 2017. The company continued to have a presence in Australia as an importer and seller of cars.3

In February 2020, the General Motors company announced that it will not continue with the Holden brand, affecting some 600 direct jobs. General Motors specified that it will continue, for at least ten years, providing after-sales service, maintenance and replacement of parts to Holden car owners. With 1.6 million Holden cars on the road, about 200 people are expected to keep their jobs.
