Land Rover Defender background information
Land Rover Defender is an SUV of the British company Land Rover. This car is a simple and reliable design, which has become truly legendary.
First generation (L316; 1983-2016)
In 1983, the production of a new generation of classic Land Rover SUVs began, initially the long-wheelbase Land Rover 110 (2794 mm) with five doors, with a capacity of 12 seats, respectively, with a spring suspension instead of a spring. The model had in its name numbers equal to the wheelbase of the car in inches.
In 1984, the three-door 9-seater short-wheelbase version of the Land Rover 90 (2360 mm) debuted.
The name Defender was given to the classic Land Rover in 1990 when the company was owned by British Aerospace. These SUVs differed from the nameless Land Rover 110 and 90 mainly by more modern door handles. Power steering and all-wheel drive are standard. There was a four-door pickup – “King Size” with a wheelbase of 130 inches. However, neither Defender nor the emergence of new Discovery and Range Rover models could save Land Rover from selling first BMW (1994), then Ford (2000) and Tata Motors (2008).
Second generation (L663; from 2019)
The new car was declassified in 2019, and its sales will start, according to preliminary data, in 2020. As a basis for the next Defender, engineers took the aluminium platform PLA (Premium Lightweight Architecture). The car received a load-bearing body, independent suspension of all wheels (optional pneumatic), permanent all-wheel drive with axle differential, optional locks, and good geometry.
There will be three modifications – short Defender 90, standard Defender 110, and long Defender 130. Six versions have been invented: a pair of petrol (P300, P400), three diesel (D200, D240, D300) and a hybrid (P400 PHEV, also known as P400e). There are five configurations: Standart, S, SE, HSE, X (X-Dynamic).
