The Nissan Xterra is a two-generation SUV manufactured by Nissan Motors and built on the Nissan F-Alpha platform, in conjunction with the Nissan Frontier pickup.
The name Xterra comes from the XTERRA triathlon competition of the same name, held under the auspices of Nissan from 1998 to 2006.
The Xterra was not the first compact SUV manufactured by Nissan. In Japan, the Nissan Mistral and Nissan Rasheen were available; in Europe, the Terrano, a two-door SUV, was also produced and sold from 1993 to 2006.
Nissan licensed the name “Xterra” from the Hawaiian TEAM Unlimited LLC team for an unknown amount of money. TEAM Unlimited owns the rights to Xterra triathlon competitions, as well as the Lifeguard Challenges that existed before them. This allowed TEAM Unlimited to strengthen the Xterra brand.
In August 2015, Nissan announced the cessation of production of the model, the last cars were sold in the autumn of the same year. Nissan has no plans to create a direct replacement or successor model.
