Mercury Monterey background information

Ford has announced that the new Mercury Monterey van will be assembled at the same Oakville, Ontario plant as the remanufactured 2004 Ford Windstar. Both models have been on sale since fall 2003.

Monterey is equipped with side curtains for all 3 rows of seats, front and rear obstacle detection, front seat air conditioning and 2-zone climate control. The Monterey will also be the only van in the North American market with a 4.2-liter V-6 engine as its standard engine.

The interior is distinguished by the expressive finish of the instrument panel with matt polished aluminum and the 3rd row seats that retract into the floor. Outside, the Monterey features a waterfall-style grille design, brushed-finish door handles, and stylish alloy wheels.

Mercury Monterey discontinued in 2007. Its “close relative” Ford Freestar ceased to exist in the spring of 2007. The Sterling Heights plant in Michigan will stop producing transmissions for minivans in November.

Instead, Ford plans to assemble “a new generation of family cars.” They will be based on the Ford Fairlane concept shown at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The car will not have a “sliding” side door and will look more like a large SUV than a minivan.

Ford’s decision to phase out its minivans comes after a sharp decline in sales of the Mercury Monterey (43% in the first seven months of this year) and the Freestar model (27% in the same period).
