Brakes
FRONT DISC BRAKES
Disc brakes are not adjustable. They are, in effect, self-adjusting during normal operation.
REAR DRUM BRAKES
Coupe, Sedan, Wagon, Brat, Loyale and XT
See Figure 1
Fig. 1:
Rear drum brake adjuster screw-Coupe, Sedan, Wagon and Brat models

Perform rear brake adjustment every 6 months/6,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Adjust the rear brakes by turning the wedge bolt, which is located on the bottom of the backing plate.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
- Remove the rubber cap from the adjusting screw.
- Tighten the adjuster until the wheel ceases to rotate.
- Back off the adjuster 180°.
- Verify that the wheel turns easily by hand.
- Install the rubber cap on the adjuster screw.
- Lower the vehicle.
Justy
See Figure 2
Fig. 2:
Justy rear brake adjustment
 |
The Justy rear drum brakes use a conventional style star wheel adjuster mechanism. To adjust the brakes, remove the rubber adjuster hole cover and, using a slightly curved small prybar inserted through the hole, turn the star wheel until the brake shoes begin to drag on the brake drum. The wheel should be hard to turn, then back off the adjuster slightly, until the wheel frees up.
BRAKE PEDAL
Justy
See Figure 3

Justy brake pedal adjustment

The brake pedal travel is the distance the pedal moves toward the floor from the fully released position.
- Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Measure brake pedal height between the floor of the vehicle and the top of the pedal after the engine is revved several times. Ensure that the pedal is fully returned by the pedal return spring. Pedal height should be 3.54-3.74 in. (90-95mm).
- Turn OFF the engine, and adjust the brake pedal as follows:
- Disconnect the stop light switch connector.
- Loosen the stop light switch locknut and back the switch away from brake pedal.
- Adjust the brake pedal to the specified height.
- Tighten the pushrod locknut to 4-7 ft. lbs. (5-9 Nm).
- Attach the switch connector.

Properly disarm the air bag on vehicles equipped with the SRS system. Failure to do so can cause serious injury. The procedure can be found in Section 6 of this manual under the heading "Supplemental Restraint System".
If the operation of the brake light switch is not smooth and/or the stroke is not within specified value, replace the switch with a new one.

Pedal height should be 6.22 in. (15.8mm).
- Turn OFF the engine. Depress the brake pedal several times. Measure the pedal free-play. If the measured free-play is not within the specification of 0.020-0.098 in. (0.5-2.5mm), adjust brake pedal as follows:
- Disconnect the stop light switch connector.
- Loosen the stop light switch locknut and back the switch away from brake pedal.
- Loosen the locknut on the pushrod and adjust the brake pedal to the specified height.
- Tighten the pushrod locknut to 4-7 ft. lbs. (5-9 Nm).
- Adjust the stop light switch to adjust the pedal free-play and attach connector.

Properly disarm the air bag on vehicles equipped with the SRS system. Failure to do so can cause serious injury. The procedure can be found in Section 6 of this manual under the heading "Supplemental Restraint System".

The brake pedal travel is the distance the pedal moves toward the floor from the fully released position.
- Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Measure brake pedal height between the floor of the vehicle and the top of the pedal after the engine is revved several times. Ensure the pedal is fully returned by the pedal return spring. Pedal height should be between 5.06-5.49 in. (128-140mm).
