Legacy, Impreza and SVX models equipped with rear disc brakes, incorporate a parking brake shoe assembly. This system uses the inside of the rear brake rotor as a brake drum and a set of brake shoes which act on the inner surface of the rotor to hold the vehicle. The mechanism that operates the parking brake shoes is the same as if it were a standard drum brake.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstans. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  2. Remove the brake caliper and pad assemblies, as outlined earlier in this section. Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper. Support the caliper from the chassis with a piece of wire.
  3. Remove the brake disc assembly.
  4. Remove the primary and secondary return springs from the brake shoes.
  5. Remove the front hold-down spring and pin. Remove the brake shoe strut and strut spring.
  6. Remove the adjuster assembly. Remove the brake shoes.
  7. Remove the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever. Remove the parking brake lever from the brake shoe.

To install:

  1. Apply a light coating of grease to the brake pad contact points. Install the parking brake lever on to the shoe.
  2. Connect the parking brake cable to the lever. Install the adjusting screws spring to the trailing brake shoe.
  3. Install the rear shoe hold-down spring and pin. Install the adjusting screw spring to the forward brake shoe.
  4. Install the adjuster assembly in between the front and rear shoes. Install the strut assembly and the spring.
  5. Install the shoe guide plate to the anchor pin and install the return springs.
  6. Install the brake rotor, caliper and pad assemblies. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  7. Adjust the parking brake shoes through the opening in the backing plate.

ADJUSTMENT
  1. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  2. Remove the rubber plug, if equipped, from the rear of the backing plate. The brake shoe adjuster wheel is accessed beneath this plug
  3. Insert a suitable brake adjustment tool into the backing plate slots and engage the lowest possible tooth on the star wheel. Move the end of the brake tool downward to move the star wheel upward and expand the adjusting screw. Repeat this operation until the brake shoes contact the rotor surface, the n back off the adjuster 2 to 3 turns.

The brake drag should be equal at both wheels.

  1. After the brakes are adjusted, install a rubber cover into each of the the backing plate slots.
  2. Remove the jackstands, and lower the vehicle.

Pump the brake pedal to seat the brake shoes before moving the vehicle.
