| Brake Shoes |
Remove the drum and inspect the lining thickness of both brake shoes. The rear brake shoes should be replaced if the lining is less than 0.039 in. (1mm) thick above the rivet (so that the lining is thicker than the metal shoe backing in most cases) in order to prevent the rivet from scoring the drum. On bonded shoes the same specification should be used and the thickness of the bonded lining should be 0.039 in. (1mm) thick above the metal shoe backing plate. As with all brake service, keep in mind that local regulations take precedence over these specifications. Always check with your local authorities to be sure you are in compliance with local laws.
Inspect the brake shoes for excessive or uneven wear, fluid contamination, bent and/or broken parts and cracks. If any of these conditions exist, replace the brake shoes.
Brake shoes should always be replaced in sets.
