FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove the dust cap from the brake drum.
- Straighten the lock washer and remove the nut, lock washer and washer.
- Pull the drum off the spindle using care not to drop the outer bearing.
To install:
- Install the drum on the spindle and install the outer bearing.
- Install the washer, lock washer and nut. Tighten the nut as follows:
- Tighten the nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
- Rotate the drum several times in each direction.
- Loosen the nut until it is completely loose.
- Tighten the nut to 1 ft. lbs. (1 Nm).
- Bend the lock washer to secure the nut.
- Install the dust cap with a new oil seal.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
ALL WHEEL DRIVE
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove the cotter pin from the hub nut.
- Remove the hub nut, conical washer and center piece.
- Remove the brake drum.
To install:
- Install the brake drum.
- Install the center piece, conical; washer and nut. Tighten the nut to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
- Install a new cotter pin.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
Sedan, Coupe, Loyale, XT, Wagon and Brat
REAR DRUM-4WD

- Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove the axle nut, flat washer and center piece. It may be necessary to tap on the hub to get the center piece out.
- Remove the brake drum from the axle.
- Using a suitable seal removal tool, Remove the seals from the front and back of the drum.
- Using a suitable press or clamp. drive out the drum bearing assembly.
To install:
- Install the wheel bearing using a press or clamp assembly.
- Install new seals to the front and rear of the drum assembly.
- Carefully install the drum onto the splined shaft.
- Install the center piece, flat washer and axle nut. Tighten the axle nut to 145 ft. lbs. (196 Nm).
- Install a new cotter pin.
- Install the wheel.
- Adjust the rear brakes.
- Lower the vehicle.
REAR DRUM-FRONT WHEEL DRIVE

- Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
- Remove the rear wheel assembly.
- Remove the dust cap.
- Remove the axle nut and remove the washer and outer wheel bearing.
- Remove the drum from the rear spindle.
- Using a suitable seal removal tool, remove the seals from the front and rear of the drum.
- Remove the wheel bearings by using a suitable press or clamp.
To install:
- Install the wheel bearings into the drum using a press or clamp assembly.
- Install new seals to the front and rear of the drum.
- Install the rear drum assembly onto the spindle.
- Install the outer wheel bearing and washer.
- Install the axle nut.
- Install the dust cap.
- Install the wheel.
- Adjust the rear brakes.
- Lower the vehicle.
FRONT ROTOR AND REAR ROTOR-4WD
See Figure 2
- Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove the lower caliper mounting bolt and remove the caliper from the mounting bracket. Suspend the caliper from the strut with a wire. DO NOT allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose.
- Remove the two caliper mounting bracket bolts and remove the caliper mounting bracket with the brake pads in place.
- Remove the cotter pin from the axle nut.
- Remove the axle nut, flat washer and center piece. It may be necessary to tap on the hub to get the center piece out.
- Remove the brake rotor assembly from the axle.
- Separate the rotor from the hub assembly, by removing the retainer bolts.
- Using a suitable seal removal tool, remove the seals from the front and rear of the drum.
- Remove the bearings from the assembly using a press to drive out the bearing.
To install:
- Install the bearings to the assembly using a suitable press.
- Install new seals to the front and rear of the hub assembly.
- Attach the hub to the rotor, using the retainer bolts.
- Carefully install the rotor onto the splined shaft.
- Install the center piece, flat washer and axle nut. Tighten the axle nut to 145 ft. lbs. (196 Nm).
- Install a new cotter pin.
- Install the caliper mounting bracket and install the caliper mounting bracket bolts and tighten to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).
- Install the caliper on the mounting bracket and install the lower caliper mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
- Install the front wheel.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
REAR ROTOR-FWD
See Figure 3
- Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
- Remove the rear wheel assembly.
- Remove the lower caliper mounting bolt and remove the caliper from the mounting bracket. Suspend the caliper from the strut with a wire. DO NOT allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose.
- Remove the two caliper mounting bracket bolts and remove the caliper mounting bracket with the brake pads in place.
- Remove the dust cap.
- Remove the axle nut and remove the washer and outer wheel bearing.
- Remove the rotor assembly from the rear spindle.
- Separate the rotor from the hub assembly, by removing the retainer bolts.
- Using a suitable seal removal tool, remove the seals from the front and rear of the drum.
- Remove the bearings from the assembly using a press to drive out the bearing.
To install:
- Install the bearings to the assembly using a suitable press.
- Install new seals to the front and rear of the hub assembly.
- Attach the hub to the rotor, using the retainer bolts.
- Install the axle nut and washer.
- Install the dust cap.
- Install the caliper mounting bracket and install the caliper mounting bracket bolts and tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
- Install the caliper on the mounting bracket and install the lower caliper mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
- Install the front wheel.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
Legacy and Impreza
ALL WHEEL DRIVE
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Loosen the parking brake adjustment.
- Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
- Remove the wheel assembly.
- Unstake and remove the axle nut.
- If equipped, remove the caliper, leaving the line connected, and suspend it aside, then remove the rotor. If equipped with rear drum brakes, remove the drum brake assembly.
- Disconnect the parking brake cable.
- Remove the sway bar clamp.
- Remove the bolt securing the lateral link to the housing.
- Remove the bolts securing the trailing link to the housing.
- Remove the halfshaft.
- Remove the bolts securing the strut to the housing.
- If equipped with ABS, remove the speed sensor from the backing plate.
- Remove the housing assembly.
- Using hub stand 92708000 and puller 927420000 or equivalent, remove the hub from the rear housing.
- Remove the backing plate from the housing.
- Remove the outer, inner and sub oil seals.
- Remove the snapring.
- Remove the bearing by pressing the inner race.
To install:
- Clean the housing thoroughly.
Do not remove the plastic lock from the inner race when installing the bearing.
- Install a new bearing into the housing by pressing the outer race.
- Pack the bearing with grease.
- Install the snapring and ensure it fits properly.
- Using installer 927460000 or equivalent, press in a new outer seal until it comes in contact with the snapring.
- Using installer 927450000 or equivalent, press in a new inner seal until it contacts the bottom.
- Install a new sub oil seal.
- Apply grease to the oil seal lip.
- Install the backing plate and tighten the bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
- Using installer 927450000 or equivalent, press in the hub into the housing.
- Connect the housing to the strut and tighten the bolts to 119 ft. lbs. (162 Nm).
- If equipped with ABS, install the speed sensor.
- Install the halfshaft.
- Connect the trailing link to the housing and tighten the bolt and new nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
- Connect the lateral link to the housing and tighten the bolt and new nut to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm).
- Install the sway bar clamp.
- Connect the parking brake cable.
- Install the rear brake assembly.
- Install a new axle nut and tighten it to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm). Stake the nut.
- Install the wheel.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Adjust the parking brake cable.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
- Disconnect t he negative battery cable.
- Loosen the parking brake adjustment.
- Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
- Remove the wheel assembly.
- Unstake and remove the axle nut.
- If equipped, remove the caliper, leaving the line connected and suspend it aside. Remove the rotor. Or if equipped with rear drum, remove the drum brake assembly.
- Disconnect the parking brake cable.
- Remove the bolt securing the lateral link to the spindle.
- Remove the bolts securing the trailing link to the spindle.
- Remove the bolts securing the strut to the spindle.
- Remove the spindle assembly.
- Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the spindle.
To install:
- Pack the oil seal located and the rear of the hub with grease.
- Install the hub on the spindle and temporarily tighten a new nut and washer to hold the hub in place.
- Connect the spindle to the strut and tighten the bolts to 119 ft. lbs. (162 Nm).
- Connect the trailing link to the spindle and tighten the bolt and new nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
- Connect the lateral link to the spindle and tighten the bolt and new nut to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm).
- Connect the parking brake cable.
- Install the rear brake assembly.
- Install a new axle nut and tighten it to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm). Stake the nut.
- Install the wheel.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Adjust the parking brake cable.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
SVX
- Set the parking brake.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
- Remove the rear wheel assembly.
- Remove the dust cap and remove the axle nut.
- Return the parking brake lever and remove the console box lid.
- Loosen the parking brake adjuster nut.
- Remove the stabilizer link.
- Remove the ABS sensor and clamp.
- Disconnect the parking brake cable clamp.
- Disconnect the brake hose from the strut.
- Loosen the caliper assembly securing bolts.
- Disconnect the trailing link from the knuckle.
- Remove the nut securing the lateral link to the knuckle.
- Remove the two nuts securing the strut to the knuckle.
- Remove the caliper assembly and fasten to the strut using wire.
- Remove the rotor.
- Remove the parking brake shoes and disconnect the cable from the shoe.
- Remove the parking brake cable clamp and remove the cable from the back plate.
- Separate the knuckle from the halfshaft.
- Remove the mounting bolts and remove the knuckle.
- Remove the bearings.
To install:
- Install the bearings.
- Install the knuckle and the mounting bolts.
- Install the halfshaft into knuckle. Tighten the axle nut to 123-152 ft. lbs. (167-206 Nm).
- Replace the parking brake cable to the back plate and install the cable clamp.
- Connect the cable to the brake shoe and install the shoes.
- Install the brake rotor and the caliper assembly.
- Install the axle nut and the dust cap.
- Install the nuts securing the strut to the knuckle. Tighten the nuts to 98-127 ft. lbs. (132-172 Nm).
- Install the nut securing the lateral link to the knuckle.
- Tighten the caliper assembly mounting bolts.
- Connect the brake hose to the strut and connect the parking brake cable clamp.
- Install the ABS sensor and clamp.
- Install the stabilizer link.
- Tighten the parking brake cable adjusting nut.
- Install the console box lid.
- Install the rear wheel.
- Lower the vehicle.
