Compressor

TESTING

Sedan, Coupe, Loyale, Wagon and Brat

  1. Verify that there is approximately 12 volts at the compressor wire harness for the motor.
  2. Ground the L wire (marked on the harness at the compressor) at the compressor and verify that the compressor motor operates.
  3. If not as specified, replace the compressor.

XT

  1. Verify that there is approximately 12 volts at the compressor wire harness for the motor.
  2. Ground the LW wire (marked on the harness at the compressor) at the compressor and verify that the compressor motor operates.
  3. If not as specified, replace the compressor.

Legacy

See Figure 1

Fig. 1: Compressor terminal identification-Legacy
  1. Disconnect the wire harness from the compressor.
  2. Using an ohmmeter, verify that the resistance between terminals 1 and 3 is 2.5-3.5 ohms.
  3. Apply 12 volts to terminals 1 and 3, and verify the compressor operates.
  4. If not as specified, replace the compressor.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 2, 3 and 4

Fig. 2: Compressor assembly-Sedan, Coupe, Loyale, XT, Wagon and Brat

Fig. 3: Compressor assembly-Legacy and Impreza

Fig. 4: To remove the tank, remove the clip, and lift out the tank
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Remove the left front wheel.
  4. Remove the front half portion of the mud guard.
  5. Disconnect the air lines from the drier assembly. The lines do not have to be tagged, because the installation order is not important.
  6. Disconnect the wire harness to the compressor.
  7. Remove the compressor and drier mounting nuts and bolts.
  8. Remove the compressor and drier as an assembly.

To install:

  1. Position the compressor assembly on the bracket, and secure in place with the retainer nuts and bolts. Tighten the nuts to 7-13 ft. lbs. (9-17 Nm). Tighten the bolts to 4-7 ft. lbs. (5-9 Nm).
  2. Attach the wire harness to the compressor assembly.
  3. Attach the air lines to the drier. The order or position does not matter.
  4. Install the mud guard, and wheel.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Start the vehicle and make sure the compressor works.
