Sway Bar

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Remove the sway bar bracket bolts from the outboard clamps at the tension rods.
  4. Remove the sway bar to frame mounting bolts, then remove the frame brackets and bushings.
  5. Remove the sway bar from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Position the sway bar on the vehicle.
  2. Install the sway bar-to-frame bushings and brackets. Install and tighten the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  3. Install the outboard clamps and mounting bolts on the tension rods and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  4. Lower the vehicle.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.


Sedan, Coupe, Loyale, XT, Wagon and Brat

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies.
  4. Remove the sway bar link-to-lower control arm mounting nuts and bolts.
  5. Remove the sway bar bracket-to-frame bolts and remove the sway bar from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Position the sway bar on the vehicle and loosely install the sway bar bracket to frame bolts.
  2. Install the sway bar link-to-control arm mounting nuts and bolts and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
  3. Tighten the sway bar bracket bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  4. Install the tire and wheel assemblies.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  2. Remove the crossmember-to-sway bar bolts.
  3. Remove the sway bar-to-lower control arm bolts.
  4. Remove the jack-up plate from the lower crossmember.
  5. Remove the sway bar.

To install:

  1. Install the sway bar and jack-up plate.
  2. Align the bushings with the painted marks on the sway bar and temporarily tighten the mounting bolts.
  3. Tighten the bolts to the following specifications:
    1. Jack-up plate-to-crossmember-24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm)
    2. Sway bar link-to-lower control arm-21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm)
    3. Sway bar-to-crossmember-18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
  4. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Remove the sway bar link-to-sway bar nuts, then disconnect the sway bar from the links.
  4. Remove the right side ABS sensor mounting bolt and bracket.
  5. Remove the right side brake hose mounting bolt and bracket.
  6. Make a matchmark on the sway bar lever-to-sway bar.
  7. Remove the nut and bolt, then remove the sway bar lever.
  8. Remove the sway bar bracket-to-frame bolts. Remove the brackets and bushings.
  9. Remove the sway bar from the right side of the vehicle.

When removing the sway bar from the vehicle, be careful not to damage the ABS sensor wires or brake hoses.

To install:

  1. Install the sway bar from the right side of the vehicle.
  2. Install the sway bar bushings and brackets. Make sure paint marks on the sway bar align with the sway bar bushings.

When installing the sway bar brackets make sure they are positioned correctly. The front of the sway bar brackets are shorter than the rear.

  1. Install the mounting bolts loosely.
  2. Install the sway bar lever with the matchmarks in alignment, and install the mounting nut and bolt, and tighten to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  3. Connect the sway bar to the sway bar links and install the mounting nuts. Tighten the mounting nuts to 38 ft. lbs. (52Nm).
  4. Tighten the sway bar-to frame mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  5. Install the brake hose bracket and bolt to the strut.
  6. Install the ABS sensor bracket and bolt to the strut.
  7. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
