The 9004 headlight bulb is a halogen type bulb. This type of bulb is very sensitive to oils on the glass lens. When removing or installing a type 9004 bulb, NEVER touch the lens, or bulb life will be severely reduced.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- From inside the engine compartment, slide the protective rubber cap from the rear of the bulb assembly, if equipped.
- Twist off the headlight bulb retainer ring and slide over the harness plug.
- Grasp the base of the bulb and pull it out from the headlamp.
- Unplug the bulb from the harness.
To install:
- Grasp the base of the bulb with your hand. Plug the wire harness into the bulb.
- Insert the bulb into the headlamp.
- Twist the headlight bulb retainer ring on until it locks in place.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Turn ON the headlight switch to make sure all the lights work correctly.
AIMING
See Figure 11
Fig. 11:
Using the built in level to align the headlight-Legacy
 |
- Park the vehicle on level ground, so it is perpendicular to, and facing a flat wall about 25 ft. (7.6m) away.
- Remove any stone shields and switch ON the lights to low beam.
- The horizontal distance between the light beams on the wall should be the same as between the headlights themselves.
- The vertical height of the light beams above the ground should be 4 in. (10cm) less than the distance between the ground and the center of the lamp lenses for the lights.
- If adjustment is needed, proceed as follows:
- On 1985-93 models, turn the adjusting screw on the headlight ring. Each headlight will have 2 adjusting screws. One will control the vertical plain, and the other will control the horizontal plain. Adjust in small increments.
- On 1994-96 models, headlight alignment is made easier because each light assembly is equipped with an adjustment level. Use a suitable wrench or socket to adjust the level indicator nut at the end of the level, until the bubble is in the middle of the sight glass.
- Test to make sure the lights work correctly, and the light pattern is even.
