DIRECT IGNITION SYSTEM

Testing

The majority of the diagnosis and testing of the direct ignition system is performed via the self-diagnosis function of the fuel injection control unit. See Electronic Engine Controls in Section 4 for more information.

SPARK PLUG IGNITION COIL
See Figure 1
Fig. 1: Cutaway view of a direct ignition system's individual ignition spark coil

Each spark plug has a separate ignition coil attached to it.

Primary Coil

See Figure 2
Fig. 2: Direct ignition primary coil resistance check

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the coil from the spark plug and engine compartment.
  3. Using a multimeter or equivalent, measure the resistance between terminals No. 1 and No. 2 of the coil wire harness. The resistance should be between 0.68-0.83 ohms. If not within this range, replace the coil.

Secondary Coil

See Figure 3
Fig. 3: Direct ignition secondary coil current flow check

This procedure requires the use of a digital ammeter or multimeter. Do not use an analog model.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the coil from the spark plug and engine compartment.
  3. Using a digital multimeter and a 12 volt power supply, connect the meter in series between the primary and secondary terminals of the coil.
  4. Measure the current amount. If the reading is not between 0.29-33 milo-amps, replace the coil.
