NOTE:

Each time side retainer rotates one tooth, backlash changes by 0.05 mm (0.002 in).

3. TOOTH CONTACT OF HYPOID GEAR

1. Adjust until correct teeth contact is obtained.

2. Check tooth contact, and perform the adjustment as follows.

• Tooth contact

Check item: Tooth contact surface is slightly shifted toward the toe side under a no-load condition. (When driving, it moves towards the heel side.)

Toe side

(B)

Heel side

• Face contact

Check item: Backlash is too large.

Contact pattern

Adjustment: Increase the thickness of pinion height adjusting washer according to the procedure for bringing the drive pinion close to the driven gear.

• Flank contact

Check item: Backlash is too small.

Contact pattern

Adjustment: Reduce the thickness of pinion height adjusting washer according to the procedure for bringing drive the pinion away from driven gear.

• Toe contact (contact on the inner dia.)

Check item: Teeth contact area is too small.

Contact pattern

Adjustment: Increase the thickness of pinion height adjusting washer according to the procedure for bringing the drive pinion closer to the driven gear.

• Heel contact (outside end contact)
