DTC P0706

Transaxle range (TR) switch circuit malfunction (open circuit)

DETECTION CONDITION

• If all conditions below are satisfied and 100 s or more have passed, the PCM determines that there is a malfunction.
- Signal from D, S, L range and R range switch is not input.
- Engine speed 530 rpm or more.
- Vehicle speed 20 km/h {12 mph} or more.
Diagnostic support note:
• This is a continuous monitor (CCM).
• The MIL illuminates if the PCM detects the above malfunction conditions during two consecutive drive cycles.
• The PENDING CODE is available.
• FREEZE FRAME DATA is available.
• The HOLD indicator light flashes.
• The DTC is stored in the PCM memory.

POSSIBLE CAUSE

• Charging system malfunction
• TR switch malfunction
• TR switch misadjustment
• Open circuit between TR switch terminal C and PCM terminal 3E
• Open circuit between TR switch terminal G and PCM terminal 3H
• Open circuit between TR switch terminal F and PCM terminal 3K
• Open circuit between TR switch terminal E and PCM terminal 3N
• Open circuit between TR switch terminal I and dash harness (JB-04) terminals
• Damaged connectors between TR switch and PCM
• PCM malfunction

Diagnostic procedure

STEP

INSPECTION

ACTION

1

VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA HAS BEEN RECORDED

• Has the FREEZE FRAME DATA been recorded?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Record the FREEZE FRAME DATA on the repair order, then go to the next step.
2

VERIFY RELATED REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY

• Verify related Service Bulletins and or/on-line repair information availability.
• Is any related repair information available?
Yes
Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available repair information.
• If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.
3

INSPECT TR SWITCH FOR OPEN

• Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
• Disconnect the TR switch connector.
• Inspect for continuity between the TR switch (part-side) terminals.
- R range: I and C
- D range: I and G
- S range: I and F
- L range: I and E
• Is there continuity between the TR switch (part-side) terminals?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the TR switch, then go to Step 7.
4

INSPECT TR SWITCH POWER CIRCUIT FOR OPEN

• Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (engine off).
• Inspect the voltage at TR switch (wiring harness-side) terminal I.
• Is there B+ at TR switch (wiring harness-side) terminal I?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Inspect the main fuse.
• If normal, repair or replace the wiring harness, then go to Step 7.
5

INSPECT PCM CONNECTOR FOR POOR CONNECTION

• Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
• Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion).
• Is the connection normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the connector and/or terminals, then go to Step 7.
6

INSPECT TR SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN

• Inspect for continuity between TR switch (wiring harness-side) terminals and PCM (wiring harness-side) terminals.
- R range: C to 3E
- D range: G to 3H
- S range: F to 3K
- L range: E to 3N
• Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the wiring harness, then go to the next step.
7

VERIFY TROUBLESHOOTING OF DTC P0706 COMPLETED

• Make sure to reconnect all the disconnected connectors.
• Clear the DTC from the memory using the WDS or equivalent.
• Drive the vehicle in each range (D, S, L, and R) for 100 s or more under following conditions.
- Engine speed (RPM PID) 530 rpm or more
- Vehicle speed (VSS PID) 20 km/h {12 mph} or more
• Is the PENDING CODE present?
Yes
Replace the PCM, then go to the next step.
No
No concern is detected. Go to the next step.
8

VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE

• Perform the "After Repair Procedure".
• Are any DTCs present?
Yes
Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
No
DTC troubleshooting completed.
