DTC P0351

Ignition coil No.1 circuit malfunction

DETECTION CONDITION

• PCM monitors output voltage to ignition coil No.1 when engine is running. If the voltage is incorrect, PCM determines that ignition coil circuit has a malfunction.
Diagnostic support note
• This is a continuous monitor (CCM).
• MIL illuminates if PCM detects the above malfunction condition in two consecutive drive cycles.
• PENDING CODE is available if PCM detects the above malfunction condition during first drive cycle.
• FREEZE FRAME DATA is available.
• DTC is stored in the PCM memory.

POSSIBLE CAUSE

• Connector or terminal malfunction
• Open circuit between PCM terminal 26 and ignition coil No.1 terminal B
• Short to power circuit between PCM terminal 26 and ignition coil No.1 terminal B
• Short to ground circuit between PCM terminal 26 and ignition coil No.1 terminal B
• Open circuit between ignition switch and ignition coil No.1 terminal A
• Ignition coil No.1 malfunction

Diagnostic procedure

STEP

INSPECTION

ACTION

1
VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA HAS BEEN RECORDED
• Has FREEZE FRAME DATA been recorded?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Record FREEZE FRAME DATA on repair order, then go to the next step.
2
VERIFY RELATED SERVICE INFORMATION AVAILABILITY
• Check for related Service Information availability.
• Is any related Service Information available?
Yes
Perform repair or diagnosis according to available Service Information.
• If vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.
3
INSPECT IGNITION COIL CONNECTOR
• Turn the ignition switch off.
• Disconnect ignition coil connector.
• Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out terminals, corrosion).
• Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Repair or replace the terminals, then go to Step 10.
No
Go to the next step.
4
INSPECT IGNITION COIL POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
• Disconnect ignition coil connector.
• Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Engine off).
• Measure the voltage between ignition coil terminal A (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
• Is the voltage B+?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the wiring harness for open, then go to Step 10.
5
INSPECT IGNITION COIL SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO POWER
• Measure the voltage between ignition coil terminal B (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
• Is the voltage B+?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness for short to power supply, then go to Step 10.
No
Go to the next step.
6
INSPECT IGNITION COIL SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND
• Inspect for continuity between ignition coil terminal B (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
• Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness for short to ground, then go to Step 10.
No
Go to the next step.
7
INSPECT PCM CONNECTOR
• Turn the ignition switch off.
• Disconnect the PCM connector.
• Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out terminals, corrosion).
• Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Repair or replace the terminals, then go to Step 10.
No
Go to the next step.
8
INSPECT IGNITION COIL SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
• Inspect for continuity between PCM terminal 26 (wiring harness-side) and ignition coil terminal B (wiring harness-side).
• Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the wiring harness for open circuit, then go to Step 10.
9
INSPECT IGNITION COIL
• Inspect ignition coil.
• Is the ignition coil normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the ignition coil, then go to the next step.
10
VERIFY TROUBLESHOOTING OF DTC P0351 COMPLETED
• Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors.
• Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Engine off).
• Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the WDS or equivalent.
• Start the engine.
• Is the PENDING CODE of same DTC present?
Yes
Replace the PCM, then go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.
11
VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE
• Perform "After Repair Procedure".
• Is there any DTC present?
