DTC P0117

ECT circuit low input

DETECTION CONDITION

• The PCM monitors ECT sensor signal at PCM terminal 41. If the PCM detected ECT sensor voltage below 0.18 V the PCM determines that the ECT sensor circuit has malfunction.
Diagnostic support note
• This is a continuous monitor (Engine cooling system).
• The MIL illuminates if the PCM detects the above malfunction condition in the first drive cycle.
• PENDING CODE is available if the PCM detects the above malfunction condition.
• FREEZE FRAME DATA is available.
• DTC is stored in the PCM memory.

POSSIBLE CAUSE

• ECT sensor malfunction
• Short to ground circuit between ECT sensor terminal A and PCM connector terminal 41.
• Short each harness ECT signal circuit and ECT ground circuit.
• PCM malfunction

Diagnostic procedure

STEP

INSPECTION

ACTION

1
VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA AND DIAGNOSTIC MONITORING TEST RESULTS HAVE BEEN RECORDED
• Have FREEZE FRAME DATA and DIAGNOSTIC MONITORING TEST RESULTS (Engine cooling system related) been recorded?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Record FREEZE FRAME DATA and DIAGNOSTIC MONITORING TEST RESULTS on repair order, then go to the next step.
2
VERIFY RELATED SERVICE INFORMATION AVAILABILITY
• Check for related Service Information availability.
• Is any related Service Information available?
Yes
Perform repair or diagnosis according to available Service Information.
• If vehicle is not repaired, go to next step.
No
Go to next step.
3
VERIFY CURRENT INPUT SIGNAL STATUS- IS CONCERN INTERMITTENT OR CONSTANT
• Connect WDS or equivalent to DLC-2.
• Turn the ignition switch to ON (engine OFF).
• Access ECT PID.
• Is ECT PID below 0.14 V?
Yes
Go to next step.
No
Intermittent concern exists. Go to INTERMITTENT CONCERNS TROUBLESHOOTING procedure.
4
INSPECT TERMINAL BENT
• Turn the ignition switch off.
• Disconnect ECT sensor connector.
• Check for bent of ECT sensor terminals A and B (part-side).
• Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Repair or replace terminal, then go to Step 8.
No
Go to next step.
5
CLASSIFY ECT SENSOR MALFUNCTION OR HARNESS MALFUNCTION
• Disconnect ECT sensor connector.
• Turn the ignition switch to ON (Engine OFF).
• Access ECT PID.
• Is ECT PID below 0.14 V?
Yes
Go to next step.
No
Replace ECT sensor, then go to Step 8.
6
INSPECT ECT SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND
• Turn the ignition switch off.
• Disconnect PCM connector.
• Check continuity between ECT sensor terminal A (harness-side) and body ground.
• Is there any continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace harness for short to ground, then go to Step 8.
No
Go to next step.
7
INSPECT IAT CIRCUIT FOR SHORT HARNESSES
• Check continuity between ECT sensor terminal A and B (harness-side).
• Is there any continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace harness for short, then go to next step.
No
Go to next step.
8
VERIFY TROUBLESHOOTING OF DTC P0117 COMPLETED
• Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors.
• Clear DTC from PCM memory using WDS or equivalent.
• Start turn ignition switch to ON (Engine OFF).
• Is same DTC present?
Yes
Replace PCM, then go to next step.
No
Go to next step.
9
VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE
• Perform "After Repair Procedure".
• Is there any DTC present?
Yes
Go to applicable DTC inspection.
No
Troubleshooting completed.
